The Select program is designed for athletes who have foundational understanding of volleyball and are looking to play in a more challenging, yet still friendly environment. Boys will play official matches against boys only, and girls play official matches against girls only. This program will provide a more intense level of practice as well as higher level of competitive gameplay using USAV rules while still valuing sportsmanship, teamwork and continuous improvement. To ensure balanced teams and a higher level of play, tryouts are required followed by a selection process where friend requests are not honored. Please note: Athletes who are currently on a club team when the season starts are not eligible to play in Select.

SELECT PRACTICE – Attending 1-2x weekly practice is mandatory. Length is 1.5 hours in Reston or Herndon and once per week, with the possibility of extra practices or clinics during the week. Based on gym availability, weeknight practices may start as early as 5:30pm and run as late as 9:00pm. Times are dependent on multiple factors, including permits, coach availability and space availability. During registration clearly indicate days available for practice (coach and/or athlete), to prevent schedule conflicts. We will do our best to work with your family’s schedule but our primary focus is to balance teams.
MATCHES – 1.5 hours to play, first to 3 sets out of 5, sets to 21 or win by 2. If time runs out, the last set does not have to go to 21 (nor win by 2) – last point win to determine set winner.

- Girls – Regular season matches begin mid September and continue until the end of October. Practices begin in early September (Fall) or early March (Spring) based on gym permits.

PLAYING TIME POLICY FOR SELECT
Select does not have an equal playing time policy and games are match play . ALL ATHLETES ACCEPTING A SPOT ON THE SELECT TEAM automatically agrees to the SELECT PLAYING TIME POLICY as detailed below:
Select Team (and League) will follow USAV rules where positional substitution is used. Some positions naturally have more playing time than others. RVB Coaches decide which players substitute on and off the court taking into account individual, team and game dynamics. Individual playing time is influenced by positional needs, skills, effort, attitude and practice attendance.
There is no equal playing time nor minimum amount of time required for coaches to play any athlete during matches.
If there are any playing time concerns, the athlete is allowed to discuss matters with the team coach, but must wait after 24 hours have passed from the last match played. If parents desire to engage with the coach regarding any matters related to their athlete, it must be after the athlete has already had an initial conversation with the coach. Note, when parents are conversing with the coach, the athlete must also be present and be an active participant in the meeting with the coach as it is the athlete’s experience that is being discussed.
Coaches will communicate any issues that impact playing time to the athlete. Keep in mind that coaches are not required to provide minimum playing time -that only exists in our House / Recreation League.
The Volleyball Director or a representative appointed by the RVB Director can be contacted, if needed.
RULES OF PLAY
Select division will follow traditional volleyball rules created by USA Volleyball (USAV).
