Molly Shapiro, a former player for Herndon Reston Youth Lacrosse from Fox Mill Estates and South Lakes, has become a beacon of excellence and community service. Her journey from the local lacrosse fields to the national stage exemplifies the ethos of Division II athletics, and her story is one of dedication, balance, and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact.

From Herndon Reston Youth Lacrosse to Tampa University
Molly Shapiro’s lacrosse journey began in Herndon, Virginia, where she played for Herndon Reston Youth Lacrosse. Her talent and determination quickly set her apart, leading her to the University of Tampa, where she has continued to excel both on and off the field. As a junior nursing major, Molly balances a rigorous academic schedule with her athletic commitments, embodying the Division II philosophy of “Life in the Balance.”

A Scholar and a Leader
Molly’s accolades are numerous and well-deserved. She is a two-time selection for the Sunshine State Commissioner’s Honor Roll, boasting a perfect 4.0 GPA in 2022, and a two-time recipient of the Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award. Beyond her academic achievements, she serves on the executive board of the Tampa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a peer mentor, tutor, and Best Buddies volunteer.

Her dedication to her studies and community service earned her the Freddie Solomon Community Service Award, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to the community. Molly’s involvement spans at least eight different organizations focused on nursing, mental health, community beautification, children’s toy drives, animal rescue, and blood donations.

Champion of Mental Health Awareness
Among her many community service activities, Molly’s role as an ambassador for Morgan’s Message holds special significance. This organization aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community, a cause close to Molly’s heart due to her personal connection with Morgan Rodgers, a former Duke women’s lacrosse player who passed away in 2019. Molly and Morgan shared the same club lacrosse team, and Morgan’s legacy inspires Molly’s advocacy work.

Balancing Life and Lacrosse
Molly’s self-awareness and dedication have been crucial to her team’s success. As Tampa University’s women’s lacrosse team made its first semifinals appearance in the national championship, Molly’s role as a supportive teammate and emotional anchor proved invaluable. Team captain Sarah Hinkle describes Molly as the team’s emotional support friend, always there to level her teammates out during intense moments on the field.

Despite her demanding nursing clinicals, which required her to miss practice every Wednesday, Molly ensured she never let her teammates down. She made up for missed practices by meeting with her coach, Kelly Gallagher, to review film and catch up on what she missed. This unwavering commitment reflects Molly’s character and her dedication to her team and community.

Looking Ahead
Molly Shapiro’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, balance, and community service. As she prepares for a future career in nursing, she remains committed to advocating for mental health awareness and giving back to her community. Her journey from Fox Mill Estates and South Lakes to the national stage is an inspiration to all young athletes in the Reston and Herndon areas.

Rest in Hoops is proud to count Molly Shapiro among its alumni and continues to support young athletes in achieving their dreams both on and off the field. Her story serves as a shining example of what can be accomplished with hard work, dedication, and a heart committed to service.
