Reston Select Basketball
Reston Select (Travel) Basketball teams have participated in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL) for more than 30 years. Teams in this league are exposed to a more competitive level of play relative to Reston Hoops House program. Numerous Reston Travel Basketball players have gone to play for area high school varsity teams, college teams, and professionally, including the NBA.
FCYBL offers a competitive winter league that includes many participating youth basketball organizations from across Northern Virginia. As an organization, FCYBL establishes league policies, schedules all games, and provides referees. For more information on FCYBL, please visit www.fcybl.org.
Players that wish to try-out for a Reston Select Basketball team MUST register online prior to attending any try-outs. The registration requirement applies to both new and returning players. Parents/Players do not pay the registration fee until they are offered and accept an invitation to play on a Reston Select Basketball Team. Players not offered a Select opportunity are encouraged to register to play in the Reston Hoops House League.
Reston Select Basketball players registration fee is $375 which includes a team uniform and additional player SWAG. Reston Select Basketball offers scholarships for families that qualify under Fairfax County requirements (i.e free/reduced meals, etc). The reduced fee is $125 and payment plans are available. AGE GROUPS
Reston Travel Basketball fields travel teams for boys and girls in the 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade age groups. In addition, all Reston Select Basketball players must reside in Fairfax County within the zip codes of 20170, 20171, 20190, 20191, 20194, 22066, 22181, 22182 and 22033. NOTE: There are two zip code exceptions allowed per team, however players must still reside within Fairfax County to participate.
TRYOUTS
ALL players MUST register for tryouts (New and Returning) prior to participating. Children who are interested in being considered for a Select team must attend the appropriate tryouts for their grade. We recommend all players attend as many scheduled tryouts as possible for the best chance at making a spot on a team. Tryouts will begin by the first week of October and be held for multiple sessions. Teams will be selected no later than mid-October. Detailed Select try-out schedules will be published in mid-late September.
Players need to check-in at each tryout they attend, bring a full water bottle, wear sneakers, and wear a white t-shirt with their last name in sharpie on the back.
SELECTIONS
Players will be selected for teams based on their performance at tryouts, skills, coach-ability, attitude and commitment.
PLAYER OBLIGATIONS
If selected, the player will be required to: (1) provide proof of grade and residence by submitting a FCPS SIS printout OR a copy of the most recent report card, a letter from your child’s current school signed by an official, and a copy of a recent utility bill; and (2) submit a medical release and an emergency contact information form; (3) register
with FCYBL.org and pay their registration fee (estimated $15-$20) before they can play in the Select League.
Select basketball provides an excellent growth opportunity for athletes and it also requires a real commitment from families and players.
PRACTICES
Teams practice 2 – 3 times per week from October through early March, generally on weeknights (although some coaches may also offer weekend practices). Practices are typically 1.5 or 1.75 hours long. Times are dependent on multiple factors, including permits, coach availability and space availability. Practice gyms are in the local Reston/Herndon area.
GAMES
The season consists of a 13 game regular season running through late February followed by playoffs. Games are scheduled over all 7 days of the week. Games are played at gyms throughout Fairfax County, with generally around half played in Reston. Most teams also play in the county post-season tournament in late February.
