AGE GROUPS
Reston Hoops House League groups players according to their current grade in school. Families may ask for players to be assigned to an older league. Decisions to move players are at the sole discretion of the Division Coordinator. Players may be placed in an older or younger grouping based on recommendation of the Division Coordinators and the approval of the family).
ELIGIBILITY
Reston Hoops is open to any child who is 6 years or older on October 1. Children playing basketball for a public or private school during Reston Hoops season are not eligible. Players in the House league are prohibited from playing for any other organization’s Select/Travel team during the same season. For children younger than 6 years old as of October 1, the 1st/2nd grade Division Coordinator may approve the child to participate based on their level of coordination and ability. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis and is solely the decision of the Division Coordinator. Parents should bring the child to an evaluation session for review by the Commissioner.

PLAYERS AND TEAMS
Reston Hoops strives to have teams of 9-10 players. However, numbers may vary based on registration numbers. We create teams based on registered players and volunteers available.
COACHES
Like most youth sports organizations in our area, Reston Hoops relies on volunteers to coach our teams. Please consider volunteering to coach or assistant coach for your registered player’s team or any team! Head coaches are reimbursed one free player registration per team coached. If you or a friend/family member are 16 or older and interested in coaching, please register to coach here. Note: Head coaches under 18 may be requested to have an adult assistant coach or high school co-coach for backup support. All registered volunteers 18 or older will need to complete a background check.
RESIDENCE
Most of our players reside in Reston, Herndon, Oakton, Oak Hill, Vienna, Franklin Farm, and Great Falls. Players from outside of Fairfax County are required to pay an additional Out-of-County Fee assessed by the county, $75 as of 9/1/24.

REGISTRATION, REFUNDS and SCHOLARSHIPS
Registration is required for all participants and volunteers.
Registration opens around September 1. A $35 Late Registration Fee will apply starting November 18th and will be charged per player. Waitlists begin when a division is full and may also apply starting in mid-November. If your child is placed on a waitlist, you will be notified by email if a spot becomes available. No fees will be taken until a waitlisted player accepts the offer into the program. REFUNDS are no longer offered once teams are formed.
SCHOLARSHIPS: To provide opportunities for all families in our community to play sports, Reston Hoops & Reston Volleyball (a non-profit organization) offers financial assistance through the Fairfax County Youth Sports Scholarship Program. To learn more about our Scholarship Program, click here.
SKILLS EVALUATION
A brief evaluation of each player’s skills is needed to competitively balance the teams within practical limits. Since skills can change markedly in one year, all 1st to 8th grade players must attend one (only one) of the sessions. The evaluation session times will be posted in October. League registration is required to attend evaluations, though you do not need to sign up for a specific evaluation time… Just show up for a session. HIGH SCHOOL Teams: click here.
GAMES
Regular season games begin in early December and continue until early/mid-March. Games are mostly on Saturdays between 9am – 4pm. Generally younger age groups are earlier in the day. Older age groups run throughout the day due to the larger number of teams and limited gym space. HIGH SCHOOL Teams: click here.
Sunday games are typically limited to tournaments and make-ups games due to weather closures. Tournaments occur two times at most and depend on the team’s success.
TEAM PRACTICES
Practices are normally limited to one hour, one night per week. Weeknights practices start around 5:30 pm. Times are dependent on multiple factors, including permits, coach availability and space availability. In the registration form there is a spot to indicate practice days you are available to hopefully prevent schedule conflicts. We do our best to work with your schedule. There may be league activities (practices/games) during the public school winter vacation period if needed. HIGH SCHOOL Teams: click here.
RULES AND PLAYING TIME
Our goal is to have each player play a minimum of two quarters. Detailed rules for each age group are available for review by clicking here.
REFEREES
Reston Hoops trains and has students, young adults, and parents as officials for all games except the high school boy’s age group where only adult officials are used. Referees are paid for their time. Prospective officials, at least 14 years old by January 1 of the current year, should sign up under the Referee Registration as a Referee. Returning officials will be contacted by email regarding training dates, but we do ask that you register as a referee in TeamSnap too.
COUNTY CANCELLATIONS
Practices and games are sometimes cancelled by Fairfax County due to weather or special activities going on in a particular school. Countywide cancellations are posted on Fairfax County social media, websites, alert systems and television stations or you may call the County Sports Weather Hotline at 703-324-5264.
EQUIPMENT
Reston Hoops will provide reversible (blue/white) team jerseys once the teams are formed. Players provide their own shorts, socks, and shoes. Winter 2024/25 – every registered player will be provided a Reston Hoops logo’d Basketball.
VOLUNTEERS
Reston Hoops is run by volunteers, except for referees. Volunteers are always needed for division coordinators, coaches, assistant coaches, County certified Volunteer Building Directors, scorekeeper/timers, and officials. Potential coaches or assistant coaches are subject to a background check. Training for coaches is usually provided by area high school coaches prior to the beginning of games. Reston Hoops will notify coaches and assistant coaches when details are known. To volunteer, please register to coach or referee. For other offers to assist, please [email protected].
